Where do you train pilots in Dallas–Fort Worth?

From Denton Enterprise Airport (KDTO) on the north side of the Metroplex, operating out of the Sheltair FBO. It is roughly 25–35 minutes from Frisco and Plano, 35–45 from downtown Fort Worth and 40–50 from downtown Dallas.

How long does pilot training take?

Sport pilot takes most people around 20–30 hours of training; private pilot has a 40-hour regulatory minimum and realistically takes 55–75 hours. Flying two to three times a week, private pilot usually lands in the four-to-eight-month range.

Do I need any experience or a medical certificate to start?

No. You can book a first lesson with no experience and no paperwork. A medical certificate (or, for sport pilot, a valid driver's licence) is only needed before you fly solo.

Is this Part 61 or Part 141?

Part 61. That lets us build training around your calendar rather than a fixed course timetable, and it means no enrolment fee and no block of hours bought up front.

What does pilot training cost here?

Which airplane should I train in?

The Jabiru J170 light sport is the lowest hourly cost and the quickest route to flying. The Cirrus SR20-G2 costs more per hour but gives you a glass panel, autopilot and airframe parachute from day one — the better choice if cross-country travel is the goal.

The path

Four stages, and you can stop at any of them.

First flight

A discovery flight is a real lesson with an instructor, logged as dual instruction. It counts toward whichever certificate you go on to earn.

Sport pilot

The fastest and least expensive certificate: fly the Jabiru J170 in daylight VFR with a passenger. Around 20–30 hours of training for most people.

Private pilot

The full VFR certificate — night, more passengers, more airplane. A minimum of 40 hours by regulation, realistically 55–75 depending on how often you fly.

Keep going

Instrument and cross-country work in the Cirrus SR20-G2, with glass panel, autopilot and an airframe parachute.

There is no enrolment fee, no block of hours to buy up front and no fixed course timetable. You book aircraft and instructor time online, fly, and get one club invoice afterwards for the time used.

Two to three flights a week is the sweet spot

Gaps longer than about ten days mean each lesson starts with review, which quietly adds hours and cost. Consistency is the cheapest thing you can bring.

One instruction rate

Instruction is billed at a single club rate whether it happens in the airplane or on the ground. We handle the billing; you never pay an instructor separately.

The member portal logs every flight and shows which Part 61 experience requirements are still open, so you always know what is left.

A4Flight Academy flies from Sheltair at Denton Enterprise Airport — the field's full-service FBO. Members and visiting pilots check in through the Sheltair lobby, and our aircraft sit on that ramp.
