Returning pilots

# The certificate is still valid. Only the currency lapsed.

Whether you last flew in 2019 or 1998, an FAA pilot certificate does not expire. Getting legal again is a flight review with an instructor, plus takeoffs and landings if you plan to carry passengers. Getting comfortable again is the part worth doing properly — and moving from six-pack steam gauges to a Cirrus glass panel is a transition we run all the time.

The path back

## What returning actually requires.

### A flight review

One hour of ground and one hour of flight with a CFI, minimum. No written test, no checkride, no re-taking your certificate.

### Passenger currency

Three takeoffs and landings in the preceding 90 days before carrying passengers — full stop at night in the same category and class.

### Medical or BasicMed

Medical and BasicMed eligibility depend on individual history and current FAA requirements. Discuss eligibility with an instructor and an appropriate medical professional; a denied medical cannot simply be bypassed through sport-pilot privileges.

### Glass panel transition

Avidyne displays, ADS-B traffic and weather, DFC 100 autopilot and CAPS. Typically a few hours of focused work — the flying has not changed, the information presentation has.

### IFR back on the table

Instrument-rated but out of currency? An IPC with an A4-approved CFI plus approaches in an IFR-capable SR20 puts the rating back to work.

### Club checkout

Aircraft-specific checkout, local procedures at KDTO and DFW-area airspace familiarization. Often folded into the same sessions as the flight review.

Realistic expectations

## Most rusty pilots need 3 to 8 hours.

Pilots off for a couple of years often need only the flight review minimums. Decade-plus layoffs and pilots transitioning to glass usually land in the five-to-eight-hour range, including the checkout. Your CFI will tell you where you stand after the first flight — not before.
